Essential oils are organic compounds that have been extracted from specific parts of a plant (its flowers, seeds, bark, etc). The essential oils I use are from Ashbury's Aromatherapy in British Columbia. They are guaranteed to be 100% pure essential oils. Essential oils are very powerful and need to be used with care. Most commonly, essential oils are inhaled (personal inhalers, diffusers, etc) or diluted in a carrier oil (such as coconut, grapeseed, rosehip, etc) and applied topically. Although some people will tell you it is ok to ingest essential oils, my education and research indicate that inhalation and topical application provide excellent benefits with low risk. As a CAHP, I do not condone or practice ingestion of essential oils. It is much safer and more nutritionally advisable to squeeze a real lemon into your water in the morning instead of adding drops of lemon essential oil. If you are thinking about using essential oils for yourself or family members, please take the time to educate yourself, find appropriate sources of expert advice and seek the experience of a professionally trained aromatherapist. Ingestion of essential oils should only be done under the advisement of a practitioner trained in aromatic medicine.
Hydrosols, or flower waters are the by-product of essential oil distillation. Many essential oils are processed via steam distillation. As the steam works through the plant product, the oils are released. Through a condensation process, the water and oils separate. When the essential oils are drawn off, microscopic drops of oil remain behind in the water (hydro) providing the lovely smell along with water-soluble plant components (sol) providing the therapeutic properties.
Hydrosols are gentle and safe and can be used on people of all ages (including babies and the elderly). They are most often used as astringents, toners and healing sprays. The Ashbury hydrosols I have available are in a mister and are easy to use. A spritz or two can hydrate the face (close eyes), or freshen a room or closet, or over the head will give you a quick pick-me-up all in an instant ... there are so many uses of these lovely products.
You may be aware of how colour is used in Reiki chakras and in Colour Therapy. It all relates to the rainbow (ROYGBIV) and the impact that colour intrinsically has on our body. The hydrosols have also been colour coordinated. Below you will find more information about the hydrosols. We carry two sizes: the traveller-size (15 ml) sprays are $5 each and the 120 ml sprays are $12-20.
